It's hard to believe that as the promotion of democracy was starting to build in England during the 19th and 20th Centuries Great Britain was taking democracy away from other people through colonization. The video below shows how elementary students in New Zealand are blogging. It may be a little basic for your tastes, but it gives some ideas of how blogs are being used. How have you seen teachers use blogs in the classroom? Do you have a blog that you write consistently on? Please list 6-7 ways that you feel blogs could be used in the classrooms or by students in general. What could be the benefits to using them consistently? Watch the video to get some ideas and think of some of your own experiences to come up with some good comments.

Nationalism--Good or Bad?

Our textbook defines "Nationalism" as "a strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country." It was nationalism that drove men like Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Garibaldi to push and fight to unify the Italian states into one nation. The question we must ask is when does nationalism push too far.

Watch the video clip below on the growing concern of nationalism in Russia. After watching the video clip, think about our discussion on nationalism in class that led to the unification of the Italian and German states. How are the people in the video clip similar to the people we discussed in class, and how are they different?

Is Technology a Blessing or a Curse?

In the past 100 years, technology has improved, grown, changed very rapidly. Even in the past 10 years, technology has changed. We are doing things with computers that I never had the opportunity to do in school. What is your view of technology? How is everything going with your team. How did your team work today? What did you get accomplished?

Tomorrow, I need to know what you are doing for your team project. Remember you need to find ways to keep your team motivated and on track. type='text'>Major Change to Gates Foundation HQ Project!!!

There has been a major change to the Gates Foundation HQ Project. The change goes with the "Culture" and "Daily Life" topics.

Daily Life:

In the "Daily Life" topic, I have removed the question referring to population. It was question number 1. The questions are now as follows:

Describe the clothing, including modern and traditional dress.

What are the schools lilke? Describe the system of education?

What leisure activities (entertainment, sports, etc.) do people enjoy?

What is the currency called? How does it compare to the U.S. Dollar?

What are its industries, exports, basis of economy?

What is currently happening in this country? Any current events in the news?

Culture:

In the "Culture" topic, I have removed the number 2 question asking what the country was known for. In "Culture", the population question from "Daily Life" will be added. The questions for "Culture" are as follows:

What are the major religions of this country?

What is the official language? What other languages are spoken?

What national traditions, holidays and festivals are celebrated?

What is the population of this country? Are there several races or cultures living there? If so, what is their relationship to one another?

What types of art are enjoyed?

What are some famous landmarks?

To see all of the questions, please access the Class Wiki. In social studies we will begin to do many more projects. Our first project will be the "Gates Foundation HQ" project. These projects will be based on real life scenarios. The teams you will be in will be based on the following positions: Management Specialist (Team Leader), Research Coordinator, Materials Coordinator, and a Presentation/Media Coordinator--all positions that you may be a part of in a future career. One of the responsibilities of the Management Specialist will be to update me daily, using this blog, about how your team is doing. To see a little about the first project read the next post.
